Why Canterbury EV Owners Call Us First

We are registered electricians who fit EV chargers every week, not a retailer with a subcontractor list.

Why We Do This

The Scorched Socket in a Hornby Garage

A couple of winters back a bloke in Hornby called us because his garage smelt like burnt plastic. He had been charging a new EV off the portable cable that came in the boot, plugged into a standard power point for eight hours a night, every night, since March. The socket had browned around the pins and the plug had started to soften. Nothing had caught fire. It was heading that way.

We fitted a 7kW wall charger on its own circuit that afternoon, with a breaker that protects the cable and an RCD that protects the people. His car now fills in a few hours instead of two days, and the charger backs off automatically when the oven and the heat pump are both running so nothing trips. The whole job, charger included, cost him less than he had spent on public fast charging in the previous four months.

That is the job this site is about. Not selling you the fanciest unit, just getting a safe, fast EV home charger on your wall for a price you knew before we arrived.

Load Management

How a 7kW Charger Lives Happily on a 63A Supply

Plenty of Christchurch homes are told they need a bigger supply or a new switchboard before a charger can go in. In most cases they do not. A small current sensor clips onto your mains and reports to the charger every few seconds. Oven on? The charger drops to 4kW. Heat pumps join in? Down to 2kW. Everyone goes to bed and it climbs back to 7kW and finishes the job well before morning.

That is dynamic load balancing, and it is built into most of the chargers we fit. The load management guide explains the limits of it, because it fixes capacity, not a board with fuse wire and no RCDs.

What Christchurch EV Owners Say

Fast is the word I'd use. Messaged Tuesday night, quote Wednesday morning, charger going in by Friday. Can't ask for much more than that.

Liam P., Merivale · 7kW smart charger

We had no idea what we needed, we just knew the overnight cable wasn't working. The advice was completely jargon-free, the charger recommendation was spot-on, and it was done in half a day. The Wallbox app is brilliant for scheduling off-peak charging.

Wall Charger vs the Cable in the Boot

Why a 7kW EV Home Charger Is Worth $1,422

The portable cable that came with the car is a get-you-home tool. Here is what changes when a proper charger goes on the wall:

Hand plugging a Type 2 charging connector into the charge port of a white electric car

The Cable in the Boot

  • About 10km of range per hour, so a flat battery takes two days
  • A general power point running flat out for eight hours a night
  • No night-rate timer and nothing slowing it while the oven runs
Wall-mounted EV charger with its cable coiled on a timber-clad wall, a white SUV parked alongside

A 7kW Wall Charger

  • 30 to 40km of range added per hour instead of about 10, so an empty battery is full by morning
  • A dedicated circuit with RCD protection, not a general power point running flat out all night
  • Night-rate scheduling in the app, which is where the real running-cost saving lives
  • Load management that slows the charger while dinner cooks, so nothing trips
  • A Certificate of Compliance your insurer recognises

$0 Switchboard Upgrade

A CT clamp on your mains lets the charger share a 63A supply with the rest of the house. It saves $1,500 to $2,500 on most older homes.

$2 to $4.50 per 100km

On a night rate, home charging costs a fifth of what public fast chargers do and a quarter of petrol. The app does the timing.

Legal, Insured, Certified

Hardwiring a charger is prescribed electrical work. Registered electricians, a CoC on every job, and public liability cover.

Home Charger Questions, Quickly Answered

A home car charger turns charging into something that happens while you sleep. Plug in at night and the car is ready by morning, at a fraction of the price of a public charger.

Every Home Charger, Same Standard

Any home charger we fit is wired on its own circuit, tested with your car and certified, whether it is a value unit or a premium one.

The Brands We Fit

We fit home chargers from Evnex, EV Power, Tesla, Wallbox and Zappi, and install chargers you already own for $873.

Questions People Ask Us

Straight answers to what people ask before they book.

Installation on its own is $873 incl. GST when you already have a charger and the cable run from your switchboard is 10m or less. Supplied and installed packages start at $1,422 with the EV Power SlimLine 7kW and top out at $2,868 for a Wallbox Pulsar Max. Those figures include the dedicated circuit, labour and your Certificate of Compliance.

The portable cable plugs into a normal 10A socket and adds about 10km of range an hour. A 7kW wall charger adds 30 to 40km an hour, so an empty battery is full by morning instead of taking two days. Standard sockets were never designed to run flat out for eight hours a night either, which is why we see scorched outlets on older homes.

Most homes built after 1995 are fine. If your board is full or your mains are on the small side, a charger with dynamic load balancing watches what the rest of the house is drawing and slows itself down, which usually avoids the upgrade entirely. We tell you which camp you are in from a photo of your board with the door open.

A standard install is 3 to 5 hours and done in one visit. You get a live test with your car, a walk-through of the app, and your Certificate of Compliance before we leave.
