EV Home Chargers Compared: Which One to Buy in NZ, With Installed Prices

Sixteen chargers we actually fit, side by side. Specs, warranties and what each one costs on your wall in Christchurch, not a retail price that stops at the box.

The Charger Matters Less Than You Think. The Features Matter More.

A customer in Fendalton once spent three weeks reading reviews before calling us, torn between two chargers that differed by $700. Both were 7kW. Both would fill her car overnight. The $700 bought a solar mode for a house with no solar panels. She bought the cheaper one and put the difference towards a night-rate power plan, which saved her more in the first year than the solar mode ever would have.

Every charger on this page delivers 7kW on single-phase. That is the speed. What you are choosing between is load management, solar charging, cable length, how good the app is, how long the warranty runs and whether support answers in New Zealand. For most Christchurch homes we steer people to the Evnex E2 Core or the EV Power BCP Smart DLB. Tesla owners usually want the Wall Connector for its cable. Solar homes should look at the Zappi.

Four Decisions That Narrow It Down

  • 1
    7kW or 22kW?

7kW unless you already have three-phase power. A 7kW charger adds 30 to 40km of range an hour and fills almost any battery overnight. 22kW needs three-phase, and most cars sold here only take 11kW on AC anyway.

  • 2
    Tethered or socket?

Tethered has the cable attached: grab, plug, done. Socket means you use your own Type 2 cable, which keeps the wall tidy and suits two cars with different cables. Tethered is the more popular pick for one EV in a garage.

  • 3
    Load management or not?

If your board is full, your supply is 63A, or your house is all-electric, yes. It costs little or nothing on most chargers here and it is the difference between a $1,422 install and one with a board upgrade attached.

  • 4
    Solar or grid only?

Only pay for solar modes if you have panels or are getting them. If you do, the Zappi is the specialist, and the Evnex E2 Core, Wallbox and EV Power Solar DLB all do a good job for less.

Type 1 or Type 2?

Almost every new EV in NZ has a Type 2 inlet. Older Nissan Leafs and Outlander PHEVs use Type 1. Every charger here is Type 2; we supply a Type 1 cable or tethered unit for imports.

The App Is Not a Gimmick

Scheduling around a night rate is where most of the running-cost saving comes from. Wallbox and Evnex have the best apps; Tesla runs through the car.

Warranty Lengths Differ

Evnex and Tesla give four years on residential installs. Wallbox and Zappi give three. For the others, ask us for the current term before you decide.

Garage Wi-Fi Is Patchy

If your garage is a dead zone, the Evnex E2 Plus and X-series have 4G built in, and the Wallbox Pulsar Max has a 4G option. Otherwise budget for a Wi-Fi extender.

Already Bought an EV Home Charger? We Fit It for $873

Plenty of chargers arrive with the car, or from an online deal that was too good to pass up. We fit any charger that is certified for New Zealand for the flat $873 labour price, with the same dedicated circuit, isolator, live test and Certificate of Compliance as our supplied packages. We check the certification first; a charger that is not approved for NZ cannot be legally installed, and we will tell you before you waste a Saturday.

The one thing to know is that the hardware warranty then sits between you and the seller rather than with us. Our workmanship warranty still covers the installation.

Not Sure Which Charger? Send Photos and We'll Recommend One

Four photos are all we need: your switchboard with the door open, the spot where the charger will go, the path between them and your meter board. One written number comes back, usually the same day.

Best Home EV Chargers, Shortlisted

The Best Home EV Charger for Most Homes

There is no single best home EV charger, but there is a best one for most Christchurch homes. For us that is the Evnex E2 Core at $1,972: made in New Zealand, load management built in, solar-ready and backed by a local support team.

Best on a Budget

If price leads, the best EV charger for home use is the EV Power SlimLine Smart at $1,422 installed. It is a proper hardwired 7kW smart charger from a Christchurch supplier. It has no load management, so it suits a house with room on the board.

Best With Solar Panels

On a solar house the best home car charger is one that can see your panels. The Zappi is built for it, and the Evnex E2 Core and the Wallbox Pulsar Plus can do it too. A basic charger will happily pull from the grid at midday while your panels export.

Our Four-Charger Shortlist

Our shortlist of the best EV chargers for home covers four situations: the SlimLine for the tightest budget, the E2 Core for most homes, the Zappi for solar and the Tesla Wall Connector for Tesla drivers. The rest of the range fills gaps, like longer cables or 4G connections.

Best for a Full Switchboard

With a full switchboard, the best home electric car charger is any unit with dynamic load balancing, because it avoids a board or mains upgrade that load management can save you $1,500 to $2,500 on. That points to Evnex, the EV Power BCP models and the Zappi.

Best If You Rent

The best home charger for EV drivers who rent is one that is easy to leave behind or take with you. A socket-type charger without a fixed cable is the simplest to move, and plenty of landlords are happy to keep a quality charger as part of the property.

Our Top 10 Home EV Chargers, and Six More

Rather than a generic list of the top 10 home EV chargers, here are the 16 chargers we actually supply and fit in Canterbury, all priced installed in the table on this page, from $1,422.

Choosing an EV Home Charger

For most Christchurch homes we point people at the Evnex E2 Core or the EV Power BCP Smart DLB: both have load management, both handle night-rate scheduling, and both are made or supported locally. Tesla owners often prefer the Wall Connector for the long cable. Solar homes should look hard at the Zappi.

Tethered means the cable is permanently attached, so you grab it and plug in. Socket means you use your own Type 2 cable, which keeps the wall tidy and suits households with two different cars. Tethered is the more popular choice for a single EV in a garage.

Only if you have three-phase power and a car that can use it. Most EVs sold in New Zealand cap AC charging at 7kW or 11kW, and a 7kW charger fills a typical battery overnight anyway. For a single-phase home, which is most of Christchurch, 7kW is the right answer.

If you want to charge on a night rate automatically, see what each session cost, or charge from solar, yes. Every charger we fit has an app for scheduling. A basic unit saves a little upfront and costs you more in power every month.

A small clamp on your mains tells the charger how much the rest of the house is using. When the oven and heat pumps come on, the charger drops its rate, then goes back to full speed when they switch off. It keeps a 7kW charger safe on a 63A supply without upgrading the board.

Yes, for $873 incl. GST with a cable run up to 10m. We check it is certified for New Zealand first. The charger warranty then sits with the manufacturer, and the installation carries our workmanship warranty.
