Three-Phase EV Home Chargers in Christchurch: Who Needs One and What It Costs
22kW sounds like the obvious upgrade. For most Christchurch homes it is the wrong one. Here is how to tell, and what it costs if it is right for you.
The West Melton Bore Pump That Made Three-Phase Worth It
A West Melton couple called wanting the fastest charger we had. Their meter board photo showed three main fuses, which meant three-phase was already at the house for the bore pump. In their case a 22kW Evnex X22 was an easy yes: no connection fee, a heavier cable to the shed, and a car that fills in a few hours between the morning school run and the afternoon one.
The same week a Riccarton townhouse owner asked for the same thing. Single-phase supply, Orion connection charge of $4,700 plus GST before any electrical work, a car that only accepts 11kW on AC anyway, and a garage the car sits in for ten hours a night. We talked him into a 7kW charger with load management for a quarter of the money. He has never once waited for the car.
That is the whole three-phase question. If it is already there, use it. If it is not, you almost certainly do not need it.
What Each EV Home Charger Type Actually Delivers
| Charger | Supply needed | Range added per hour | Empty to full, 60kWh battery | Installed in Christchurch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portable cable, 10A socket | Single-phase | ~10km | 25+ hours | Not an install |
| 7kW wall charger | Single-phase | 30–40km | 8–9 hours | from $1,422 |
| 11kW three-phase (most cars' AC limit) | Three-phase | 60–70km | 5–6 hours | $2,572 |
| 22kW three-phase (cars that accept it) | Three-phase | 120–130km | ~3 hours | $2,572 |
Most EVs sold in New Zealand accept 7kW or 11kW on AC. Only some, including certain Renault, Tesla Model S/X and a few European models, take the full 22kW. Check your car's onboard charger rating before paying for 22kW.
What Orion Charges for Three-Phase
Orion is the lines company for Christchurch, Selwyn and Banks Peninsula. Its posted connection charges from 1 April 2026 are the starting point for any three-phase conversation:
- Urban three-phase connection: $4,700 + GST, within 30m of the network, up to 60A per phase
- Urban single-phase connection: $2,500 + GST, same conditions
- Rural connection: $9,000 + GST, within 150m
- Converting an existing single-phase home: priced case by case; budget on the urban three-phase figure
Those charges are before the electrician's work at the house: a new meter board, main switch and board changes. MainPower covers Waimakariri (Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Woodend, Pegasus) and has its own schedule. We handle the application for you if you go ahead.
Already Three-Phase? Yes.
Lifestyle blocks with bore pumps, some new builds, homes with big workshops. The X22 is $2,572 installed and it is the fastest home charging in Canterbury.
Two EVs? Probably Not.
Two 7kW chargers sharing one CT clamp charge both cars overnight on a healthy single-phase supply, for less than the Orion fee alone.
Big Renovation? Maybe.
If you are adding a pool, a workshop, ducted heat pumps and an EV in one go, three-phase can be the cleaner answer. We will model the loads with you.
How to Check
Open your meter board. Three main fuses or a three-pole main switch means three-phase. One of each means single-phase. Or just send us the photo.
Not Sure What Supply You Have? Send the Meter Board Photo
Four photos are all we need: your switchboard with the door open, the spot where the charger will go, the path between them and your meter board. One written number comes back, usually the same day.
22kW, 11kW and the Fastest Home Charging
Does a 22kW Home Charger Make Sense?
A 22kW home charger needs three-phase power and a car that accepts 22kW on AC, and very few do. Most EVs top out at 7kW or 11kW from a wall charger, so a 22kW unit usually runs at half speed or less. The Evnex X22 at $2,572 is the one we fit when it genuinely makes sense.
The 11kW Home Charger Sweet Spot
An 11kW home charger is the sweet spot for a house that already has three-phase, because 11kW is the most many popular EVs accept on AC. It adds 60 to 70km of range an hour. Without three-phase, the lines company connection charge usually outweighs the time saved.
The Fastest Home EV Charger You Can Use
The fastest home EV charger you can sensibly run is 22kW on three-phase, but the real limit is the car. Check your car's onboard charger first. If it accepts 7kW on AC, a 7kW charger is as fast as anything you can buy for home.
